Dress Code

The Board of Education believes that dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. Students’ clothing must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the educational process. (E.C. 35183, Board Policy 5136 and 5132).

A STUDENT COMING TO SCHOOL WITH INAPPROPRIATE DRESS WILL BE REQUIRED TO CALL HIS/HER PARENTS TO BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES. REPEATED VIOLATIONS WILL RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

Students may wear a school uniform which consists of a white or red polo style top with navy blue bottoms (shorts, skirts/skorts, or pants). School uniforms reflect an orderly and focused learning environment. Students are required to use good judgment to respect themselves and others and to demonstrate modesty in selecting clothes. Clothing may not advertise, condone, depict or promote the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs or violence. Also prohibited is clothing with vulgar, obscene, sexual or racist, images or writings that promote disruption of the educational setting.

Current Fashion Trends that Conflict with Ruby’s Dress Code

  • All garments should fit appropriately – no overly tight, oversized or improperly fitting garments.
  • No sagging pants.
  • No low-cut blouses.
  • No spaghetti strap blouses – the strap of any top must be at least one inch wide and should not show any undergarments.
  • No strapless tops, single shoulder strap tops, halter tops, or backless tops or dresses.
  • No blouses that expose the belly or mid-drift area – no skin should be exposed when the student raises his/her arms above his/her head.
  • No athletic jerseys or other shirts with elongated armholes are to be worn except over a shirt or t-shirt.
  • No pajamas or slippers except on special spirit days approved by administration.
  • Skirts and shorts must be longer that the student’s fingertips when his/her arms are held straight down against his/her side.
  • No clothing that suggests, in any way, any gang, group or idea that may intimidate or offend another student on the basis of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
  • Belts are not to dangle from pants but are to be worn through the belt loops.
  • No studded jewelry, belts or clothing.
  • No hoop earrings that have a diameter more than ½ inch; no dangling earrings longer than one inch.
  • No wallet chains or other potentially harmful accessories.
  • No bandanas worn anywhere on the body.
  • No hats or caps may be worn backwards, sideways or inside buildings.
  • No wheelies (shoes with skates in the heels), flip-flops or slippers. Shoes must have backs on them and be appropriate for recess and physical education activities.
  • No inappropriate signs, symbols, pictures or words on any garments or headgear.
    • Examples of inappropriate symbols: Playboy bunny or other similar products, alcohol, tobacco and drug related materials, references to sexual or illegal acts.
  • No fake fingernails which could impede typing.
